http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KHA1MiRieLQ "A Short Story About Coffee."" How is a person supposed to know what they want in life? From writer/director Casey Donahue, is a short story about coffee."
This is a 3:25 minute video. The title scene is up for about 3 seconds. I think it should be up for a little bit longer. The white text is centered on a black scene and it looks like a hand written font. I like how he starts off the story. The main character is standing in a field of grass/tress and there is a voice over, which is the main character's voice. Then the music starts. He shows a girl standing in the same spot he was. He does another voice over and introduces the girl. Then he shows a close up of her face and she says, "What do you want?" Then the main character does a voice over and responds with "I dunno." He does the same thing 4 more times, but with different girls. On the last three girls (close-ups) he has text at the bottom of the screen that says what they hate. It's in the same font as the movie title but it's in yellow this time. He shows a picture of the Earth, his house, and a bakery next. Then the camera angle switches and he shows a close-up of his face. The camera is slowly zooming in on his face. Then it shows a zoom-in shot of an iced coffee. The first 40 seconds are basically him introducing himself and the video. The next scenes are the main character and the worker in the coffee shop talking. They mainly show close-ups of the main character and the worker. They have a few waist-up shots of the characters. Both characters are in the scene, but sometimes you only see the back of the other character's head. They have a few point of view shots. They show the worker leaving the store and the main character is drinking the iced coffee that he gave him. Worker is walking down the street and throws his apron in the air. The camera follows the apron from the sky to the ground as it's falling. Camera is now looking at the main character drinking the iced coffee as he is watching the worker walk away. Then it ends.
I really liked this short story. It flowed well and I understood it. 3 minutes is not a lot of time to create a story. The camera was very steady the whole time. They probably used a tripod. All of the shoots were clear, so he probably had a high resolution camera. I liked the different camera angles. He would always show a zoomed-out and zoomed-in angle of the person. He even showed a few point of view shots like him opening the door, the iced coffee, and the apron falling. The music is simple, but it adds to the video. The music changes around 40 seconds. A conversation starts between the main character and the coffee worker, and there is still music playing very low. Around 2:36 minutes the music changes again when the coffee worker leaves the building. At 2:58 minutes the video ends with a black screen. I think he should have faded the black screen between the last scene. For the next 25 seconds it shows Soul Pancake's logo and a few videos that have links to them. I am not a fan of the typography in this video. It looks like it was hand written. He had two still shots, one of his house and the other of Earth. That doesn't bothering me too much that it's not moving, but I think the piece would have flowed better if he could have showed a video of his house and Earth. A video would be hard to do of Earth unless you found some satellite footage, which would be hard to do. Overall, I think this short story was very well done.
